In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SULLIVAN, Bernard Vincent - After a life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories, Bernard Vincent Sullivan passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on September 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will endure.
Born October 20, 1940, in rural Renous, New Brunswick, Bernie was the beloved son of Vincent Sullivan and Mary Sullivan (Hogan). The middle of five siblings, Bernie shared a close bond with his brothers and sisters that endured until the end, despite the geographical distance between them. Their mother, Mary, instilled in all five children a deep appreciation for education, and each went on to graduate from St. Francis Xavier University and enjoy rich and successful careers.
Bernie joined the military at 17 as an Ordinary Seaman (OS) and served aboard ships that included HMCS Bonaventure, Canada's last aircraft carrier. He went back to school and became an officer, working within the Training Development Command. He served with distinction and became a senior officer, achieving the retirement rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy.
He met his wife, Julie (Gomer), in Halifax in 1967, and together they embarked on a military life that took them across Canada and abroad. Along the way, Bernie and Julie built lifelong friendships filled with good times, great laughs, and wonderful memories. These friendships remained an important part of their lives until the very end, with a fond shout-out to the "Friday Night Gang."
Bernie was known for his dry sense of humour, which stayed with him right up to his final hours. He could play many instruments by ear, loved a good game of chess and tennis, and, until his body rebelled, enjoyed hitting the greens on the golf course. Above all, he adored his seven grandchildren—Jacob, Alex, Madoc, Seamus, Conner, Ruby, and Julianne—and was immensely proud of each of them. He attended countless hockey and lacrosse games, regattas, music festivals, recitals, and horse shows, always there to cheer them on and support their accomplishments.
Bernie was the devoted father of three surviving children, who are deeply grateful for the love, care, and guidance their dad provided throughout their lives. He will be deeply missed by Grant (Kim), Karin (Scott), and Kevin (Allyn). He is survived by his cherished wife of 57 years, Julie, his partner and companion, who could always count on Bernie to make her laugh with one of his many barbs and zingers.
Bernie is also survived by his siblings Virginia Sullivan, CND, Frank Sullivan (Dee Dee), Ann Sullivan, and Veronica Lavoie (Paul), as well as his nephews and niece, their spouses, and children. Family connections meant a great deal to Bernie, and he treasured these relationships throughout his life.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the Halifax Infirmary CCU for the care and compassion shown to Bernie and his family during his short and unexpected health crisis.
Bernie was a man of deep faith, which gave him immense peace in his final days. He will be forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 9, 2026, at 12:00 Noon at Pope St. John XXIII, 35 Colby Dr, Cole Harbour. A reception will follow in the church hall. Visitation will take place the evening before on Tuesday September 8 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth.
