SANDERSON, William John (Sandy) - passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2007. He was born in Peebles, Scotland, August 8, 1923, a son of the late William J. and Mary (Ellis) Sanderson. In 1939 he joined the Royal Navy as a boy seaman and served through the Second World War and Korean Conflict. In 1953, he joined the RCN and he and his wife came to Canada. He served as Communications Officer in several ships and establishments, including HMCS Cornwallis where he was an instructor in the Communications School. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Mary Brumgard, New Jersey; his wife of 56 years, Marian; son, Bill (Shelly) Sanderson; daughters, Laurie (Bruce) Faulkner, Catherine Sanderson and husband Peter Myatt, all of HRM; and daughter, Sheila (Tony) Alexander of England; grandchildren, Claire and Diane, England; Angela, Beth and Jessica, Quebec; Sarah, Alberta; Marie and Billy, Maine; Nathan, Eric, Lauren, Tony and Jack, all of HRM; 15 great-grandchildren and his extended family of loving caregivers at Scotia Nursing Home, Beaverbank. He was predeceased by his brother, Jack Alexander, and an infant son, John. He was a friend of Bill W. for 23 years. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in St. Clements Church, 16 Gaston Rd., Dartmouth, on Thursday, February 22, at 2 p.m., Father Robert Floyd officiating. All are welcome, of any religious faith or of none. An informal reception will follow in the church hall where Sandy spent many Thursday evenings with his friends. His ashes will be carried to sea on HMCS Sackville, May 1, 2007, family members only. (The Halifax Chronicle Herald 20 Feb 2007 / Research by George Newbury)
