In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
NELSON, Charles Henry (Charlie) - Surrounded by his family, Charlie passed away peacefully on December 6, 2003, at the Portage District General Hospital aged 85 years. He is survived by his wife Dorothy.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Royal Road South, on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Brad Elliot officiating.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Charlie was born on July 04, 1918, at Lily Bay, Manitoba, the eighth child of George and Edith Nelson. In 1926, the family moved to the Curtis District where he attended school. As a young man he attended “Cow Collage”, worked on the CNR extra gang before moving to Kamloops, BC to work on the dairy farm at Tranquille Sanatorium. From there he joined the RCNVR and served on the Corvette Port Arthur doing escort duty across the North Atlantic and on D-Day 1944. Following the war he and his brother, Ben, farmed at High Bluff where he remained until his death.
In 1948 Charlie married Dorothy Freed and together they raised four boys – Henry (Lynda) of Charleswood, Manitoba, George (Lorraine) of Cranbrook, BC, Dave (Heather) of High Bluff and John (Kathy) Kowerchuk of Yellowknife, NWT. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant daughter: Edith Janine, brother: Dave of Salmon Arm, sisters: Annie Jones of Revelstoke, Grace Nelson of Newton, Maude McCallister of rural Portage, brothers-in-law: John McCallister, Dick Jones, George Watkinson and Hector Lamont, and sister-in-law: Evelyn Nelson.
Surviving besides his children are one brother, Ben of High Bluff, sisters: Margaret Nelson of Winnipeg, Gladys Watkinson of Stonewall, Edith Lamont of Portage, Iris (Bud) Clark of Sorrento, BC, sister-in-law Evelyn (Ted) Cook, nine grandchildren: Charles, Robert, Alison, Riley, Kelsy, Kristy-Layne, Shelby, Tianna and Jay, three great grandchildren: Ryan, Brittany, and Paige. There are many relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
During his active years he enjoyed his work with the Manitoba Dairy & Poultry Co op, the Portage Fair Board, the Manitoba Pool Elevators, the High Bluff Hall, and the 4-H. He was a member of St Anne’s Anglican Church and served for several years on the vestry. His main interest was his family and friends and he worked quietly to support their endeavors. He was dearly loved and will be missed by those whom he touched.
