In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
THOMPSON, Nora Kathleen (née JACKSON) - was born 1923 in Toronto, daughter of Maunsel Jackson (II) and Muriel Hooper.
In the 1931 census Nora is 7, living at 103 Heath St W. in Toronto, with her parents Mansell 55, and Mary 37, and her siblings Robert 17, Constance 16, Rosalie 15, Lewis 14, William 12, Phillip 5. Her father is a draftsman at a wire factory.
Nora served in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) 1943-45. She was about 20 when she signed up; she could have been stationed at any of a number of RCN depots across Canada; her first posting would be HMCS Conestoga in Galt Ontario, the WRCNS basic training facility.
A newspaper feature written by Nora appears in the July 1943 "The Crowsnest", titled "The story of the first Canadian Wren to take a trip out to sea." Unclear if Nora's WRCNS trade is 'writer', it may be; she is not listed in the paper staff box.
Nora married Alfred Thompson July 17, 1946, at St Mathias' Church in Toronto. Nora and Alfred settle first in Toronto where Alfred earned his law degree. They relocate to Alfred's home town Penetanguishene after 1948 and raised a family there. Alfred established a law practice in Penetang, served on town council and in 1966 became Assistant Crown Attorney in Barrie and Simcoe County.
