John Patrick McLean, the son of John Henry McLean and Nancy Maria Tager, was born 4 Sep 1906 at Empty Island, Quebec. He married Florence Velma McPhail at Westville, NS on 12 March 1928. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at Halifax, 7 Jan 1928, dividing his time between training at H.M.C.S. Stadacona and merchant service as a fireman, oiler, and junior engineer; elevated to active service commencing 4 October 1939; wounded aboard the H.M.C.S. Woodstock at Algiers, 15 March 1943; 59 months or almost continuous service afloat from 1939 to 1945 with a variety of Canadian and British ships, including H.M.C.S. Gaspé, St. Claire, and Peregrine; discharged from service on 31 July 1945, shortly after failing his Chief Stoker examination. His post-war service includes several years with the R.C.M.P., in particular the R.C.M.P. Ship Irvine, retiring as Corporal. McLean died at Pictou, N.S. on 28 Jan 1980. (Courtesy of Curt Mainville)
Prior to enlisting in the RCNR John was serving in the Pictou Highlanders and as a Fireman on the SS LOVAT.
