Highway Fatality; Police Hold Driver - The Annapolis Spectator of July 16, 1953
Deep Brook, July 12 - Able Seaman James Madden, 22, of Glace Bay, was killed late Saturday evening while walking on the main highway, near HMCS Cornwallis, when struck by a motor vehicle which police say failed to stop at the scene.
The fatality occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on the main Halifax-Yarmouth highway near the Hollow Spot Canteen, less than a half mile from the main gate of the naval training base.
It is said that Madden was walking west toward the canteen with three friends when he was struck by a motor vehicle traveling in the same direction. Witnesses reported he was carried 50' by the vehicle to the grounds in front of the canteen.
Less than two hours later, a truck was found ditched and damaged east of Clementsvale and the driver taken into custody. The driver gave his name as Stanley Pyne, formerly of Clementsvale and now residing in Deep Brook.
Chief Petty Officer Michael T. Sernenick, one of the chief witnesses to the fatality, who was still at the scene of the accident and took charge until the arrival of the RCMP, reported that a truck which he believed was involved in the accident, had passed the scene some 10 minutes later, traveling in the opposite direction. Road blocks were set up by the Bridgetown and Digby detachments of the RCMP. Mr. Semenick then left for his summer quarters at Sandy Bottom Lake, Milford. On the Clementsvale road he found the abandoned truck, the presence of which he reported to the RCMP, who later picked up Pyne and his wife near the abandoned truck.
Mr. Pyne was taken into custody and jailed at Digby. He will be taken to Annapolis Royal Monday where charges will be laid, police said.
Dr. Gordon Mahaney of Bridgetown, the coroner, empanelled a coroner's jury but after viewing the remains, the inquest was adjourned until Thursday afternoon at HMCS Cornwallis. Foreman of the jury is W. H. Spun of Deep Brook.
Investigation of the fatality is being carried out by the Digby and Bridgetown detachments of the RCMP.
