In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
McHARDY, James David - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James David McHardy in Cowichan District Hospital on April 29, 2026.
Born in Winnipeg to James and Martha (Verschoore) McHardy, James was predeceased by his older sisters: Willa, Helen, and Shirley; first wife Marlane, and daughter Debra. He is survived by daughters: Loraine (Rob), Dianna, Christina (Jack), Valerie (Arnold), and Suzanne (Peter); his wife Rosalie, seventeen grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
Jim joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954, choosing the radio communications trade. He served on both coasts but was mainly West Coast-based, including postings to CFS Aldergrove. Starting with his first ship, the HMCS Fraser, he rose through the ranks to Chief Petty Officer First Class, and finished his career as Coxswain of the HMCS Mackenzie in 1982.
In his retirement years, he and Rosalie hiked the north coast of Vancouver Island many times, later switching to camper travel and exploration in Baja California during the winter. After buying property and building his and Rosalie's dream home in Cobble Hill, Jim was happy pursuing many activities, from keeping the property in order, to fishing and golfing, to wine making, where he performed careful quality control.
Thank you to Drs. Millson and Pullan and staff at Cowichan District Hospital for their care and compassion during Jim's last days.
There will be no service. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Parkinson Society British Columbia https://parkinson.bc.ca/ways-to-give. (The Victoria Times Colonist 09 May 2026)
